How do you remove musty smell from books without damaging them?

I bought some interesting books from second-hand reference to a yard sale, and do not realize that they were stale. The form is not visible, but it smells, how they were kept in a damp cellar. I have a mold allergy, and ask me if there is any way to de-contaminate the books. I DO NOT want to cover the smell with Febreze, because the shape still be there.

the previous answer is a good option, but technically can not get rid of that mold. Conservation is a process where they consider it against the worst, maybe the repair of the pages, art, etc. authentic You have to get rid of the form, that is the book. "There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in indoor air, according to the Environmental Protection Agency; the way to the indoor mold control is to control moisture. "This prevention is to prevent mildew and mold on materials, but have nothing to rid the mold. perhaps enclosing these books (which they are collector's items) or getting rid of them (if the $ 1'm kind of books). and be responsible if they get rid of a note in the inside of the book that it is damaged and mold. This is a serious problem, and many people react differently on them. You dont want to hand someone in this book, the baby comes over them and chews it pages or plays with him. Good Luck, Lissette

A gorgeous tragicomic novel of working-class New Orleans. Zib and Wilson Bailey--Jerusha's two grown kids--think the thick cloud of cigarette smoke enveloping their mother is what probably killed their father. Certainly the toxicity of Jerusha Bailey's dark and cynical attitudes has driven her children far from home. Wilson has escaped to Chicago, married, converted to Judaism, become a professor of Organic Evolution, all of which earns his mother's scorn. She doesn't think much of her daughter either: Zib, almost forty, unmarried and directionless, has made it only as far as the Florida Panhandle, where she's the assistant manager at the local Winn-Dixie and must fight off her boss's affections. So obliviously isolated is Jerusha, only one person is left in her sights: Dustin Puglia, chubby, wise, and fearless, a ten-year-old living next door with a poisonous mother of his own. The two become attached in this hilarious story of responsibility and blame. Secondhand Smoke is a deeply universal tale of blunt truth and hard-earned redemption.

She's nasty, she's prejudiced, and she's finally killed her husband (or at least, that's what her kids believe). She may be the most obnoxious woman in all of New Orleans. But by the end of this remarkable novel, readers will also find Jerusha Bailey infuriatingly lovable-a hilarious antiheroine who "takes life's hardest punches and survives" (Larry Baker, author of The Flamingo Rising).

A brilliant novel from an exciting new writer. Isadora Myung Hee Sohn—Isa—worships her mother, an exceptional beauty, born in Seoul and sheltered in a harem of sisters inside the wealthy family’s compound. Isa’s father, a scientist and professor, an orphan, is haunted by the war in which he served as a South Korean soldier and by a painful secret that he keeps from his wife. Still mourning the death of Isa’s younger brother, Stephen, her parents are traditional enough to prize their dead son over their living daughter; to them, Isa only half exists. But unlike many Asian American daughters, Isa is neither meek nor a quiet victim of tradition. Despite her parents’ success and sophistication—they’ve achieved the American dream—she repudiates their values, embarks on her own sexual education, and runs away with an albino boy, Hero. At the same time, Isa suspects that despite her mother’s strict adherence to Korean traditional values, she is involved with another man, and Isa determines to make the affair known. What begins as a child’s unthinking fury at her mother soon leads to more deadly consequences. A daring, haunting, inspired debut.

The Realm of Secondhand Souls The Realm of Secondhand Souls
$4.48

The realm of secondhand souls is a place where antique fabrics hold the secrets of their former owners, where found objects uncover lost worlds, and where a uniquely gifted young woman who has lost nearly everything finally finds herself. In her mesmerizing first novel, Sandra Shea recounts the life of Novena, born on a hot summer night surrounded by a circle of aunts, who offer the protection of their unfettered love. But when Novena is orphaned and sent to live with her aunt Elegia and four boy cousins, she retreats from their boisterous clamor into the realm of her imagination. It provides safe haven for years -- until she is forced back into the world by a tragic disappearance connected to her cousin Zan, torturer of all creatures smaller than himself. Blaming herself for the tragedy, Novena escapes to live with her great-aunt Annaluna, who is besieged by demons of her own, including the ones that reside in the hundreds of shoes that fill her apartment. It is only when Novena stumbles into a vintage clothing store called God of Sand that she begins to recognize her special gifts of insight. In the tattered folds of yesterday's suits and chemises, she can sense the hidden histories and memories that help her stitch her life back together. The setting for THE REALM OF SECONDHAND SOULS is unmistakably contemporary, yet time and place remain deliberately filmy, beautifully illustrating the vaporous, murky boundaries between our dreams and our memories, between the seen and the unseen, and between past and present in a modern world where nostalgia is paramount. Sandra Shea's magical novel is a story of how our families possess us and how our possessions become our family. Enter this mysterious and unforgettable realm, and you will never want to leave.

This book is about using art as an instrument of personal transformation, enabling us to move from an inherited to a chosen state of being. Peter London offers inspiration and fresh ideas to artists, art students, and art teachers—as well as to people who think they can't draw a straight line but want to explore the joys of creative expression. Inside every person, he believes, there is an original, creative self that has been covered over by secondhand ideas, borrowed beliefs, and conditioned behavior. By freeing the capacity for visual expression—a natural human language possessed by everyone—we can awaken and release the full powers of that original self. Among the topics and exercises included are: How to increase the ability to visualize, fantasize, and dream Obstacles to the creative encounter and what to do about them Experimenting with art media as true mediators between imagination and expression Making masks to reveal the hidden self Painting with "forbidden" colors Arranging found objects as metaphors for one's life
